Artist Statement
I believe it is important to record the massive technological and cultural changes that the world is experiencing, and its affect on humanity, while maintaining the classic forms that have brought us to where we are today. I intend to develop this documentation into narrative works that create a new American mythology.
My recent work has focused on the human figure and its interaction with technology, and the media. Typically it consists of cast iron and fabricated steel, with integrated mechanical and electronic elements, to add context to the modern age. I work figuratively at full human scale , with both old and new techniques, focusing on exemplary craftsmanship, to create works that will withstand the test of time, both physically and conceptually.
I find that, as all things in life, sculpture often doesn't work out the way that you planned. I feel that the secret is to work with what you have, and that the ability to utilize the idiosyncrasies and mishaps, and form them into a finished piece is what makes each work of art unique. It's the residue of the "artist's hand" and the inconsistencies of the materials that separate art from the manufactured.
