Statement:
There is a very complicated welding technique called TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding. Over the years I have often asked professional welders if they can TIG something, and the common answer is that I need to find “a girl to do it because they are much better at it”. It intrigued me that, in an extremely macho male dominated field, women’s expertise was held in such high esteem. This, led me to create Reconstructing Laura.
Reconstructing Laura Is about how women, over the last 30-40 years, have progressed in society from being under paid for equal work, to being revered for their skills in many male dominated fields. The piece is intended to honor the progress that both women, and society in general, has made towards equality, over the course of my lifetime.
