Statement:
My uncle, Madison Hortman, died in a car accident when I was 4 or 5 years old. One of the few memories I have of him is when he gave me a TONKA truck for Christmas, just before he died. This side of my family has worked in mechanical fields for generations, and is where I get my interest in machinist techniques.
This piece is intended to honor both my uncle and our heritage in working with machines. It is intended to recall a sense of childhood, but at the same time make us ponder the course our life has taken from then to now. The rough unfinished look of the metal is intended to comment on the struggles in our life and how those hard times make us rugged yet beautiful people.
